MANUELINO, the style of Portugal

In the early 16th century (the golden period of the country) Portugal was governed by King Dom Manuel the 1st. This decorative style started in Batalha Monastery and is hand carved all over churches and monasteries (the most impressive example of this style  is found at Jerónimos).

This style is also called, late gothic or gothic from the sea, both make sense because in fact the structures of the buildings are gothic, with influences from the sea such as sea shells, cables from the ships, coral, anchors, the armillary sphere, and the order of Christ Cross, the last two where the arms of King Manuel.

There is much more to discover in the Manuelino, it would be a pleasure to show you these symbols woven into the most beautiful works of art around Portugal.
