Queluz National Palace, an 18th Century summer palace for Queen Maria, one of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in Europe.  Admire also the manicured gardens with statuary.

The Capuchos Franciscan convent, Convent of Santa Cruz is of the sixteenth century, built nestled into the rocks and boulders and natural surroundings in absolute simplicity.  The cells are lined with cork from the abundant cork trees of Portugal to insulate from the cold and humidity.

It is always nice to end the tour with a beautiful scenic drive to Cascais on the way back to Lisbon.

First stop,  Quinta Sao Pedro for coffee and pastries.

We visited the XVI century Sintra National Palace now a historic museum that is the best preserved medieval Royal Palace in Portugal.

Castle of the Moors (Castelo dos Mouros) is located high up above Sintra and is a symbol of this romantic village.  Take the long but beautiful nature walk to the castle ruins as they offer spectacular views.   I am sure you will enjoy walking the castle walls while taking in the panorama of Sintra.

Beginning the private tour today from Lisbon, Portugal,  we set off to explore  the medieval town of Obidos where preparations for a medieval fair were underway.

Next we drove to the fishing village of Nazare.  A summer resort area with Portuguese beach cabanas.

Here we enjoyed fish stew and sampled dried fruits from a local vendor in the traditional clothing of this area.

Continuing on to Batalha Monastery, an impressive example of gothic architecture and an Unesco World Heritage site.  After visiting the monastery we enjoyed espresso bica and sweet pastry called pastel de nata, a Portuguese egg tart.

The last site on today’s tour is Fatima, one of the most important of Catholic shrines.  Fatima’s Sanctuary welcomes millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world annually.
